This book presents a state-of-the-art review of the fail-safe and damage tolerance approaches of metallic aircraft structures, allowing weight savings and increasing aircraft reliability and structural integrity, and provides numerical techniques for stress analysis of cracked structures.   Avoiding or controlling fatigue damage is a major issue in the design and inspection of welded structures subjected to dynamic loading. Life predictions are usually used for safe life analysis, i.e. for verifying that it is very unlikely that fatigue damage will occur during the target service life of a structure.

Fatigue of Aircraft Structures (International Series of Monographs in AERONAUTICS and ASTRONAUTICS: Proceedings of the Symposium held in Paris, 16thth MayDivision IX: Symposia, Volume 12) and a great selection of related books.

This book is comprised of 21 chapters and begins with a description of an approach to structural reliability analysis based on order statistics and the expected time to first failure in a fleet of specified magnitude, along with its application to structures subject to progressive fatigue damage.

Full-scale Fatigue Testing of Components and Structures presents the approaches to the testing of full-scale components or structures. The book begins by examining the necessity or desirability of full-scale fatigue testing.

Subsequent chapters are devoted to the discussion of fatigue testing done on aircraft structures, railway components, helicopter rotor heads, artillery gun structures, and bridge.

This book is primarily a textbook written for people working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials associated with design, predictions, load spectra and experimental verifications. Many different fields of interest are involved, as the block diagram on the front cover : Springer Netherlands.

Fatigue plays a significant role in the crack growth of the fuselage skin structures. In addition, the fuselage may suffer also from the corrosion damage, and the wear defects.

This chapter first summarizes the evolution of fatigue design requirements for aircraft structures. For metallic (mainly aluminium alloy) structures these requirements have developed since the s. Major gaps in the present state of knowledge are identified and further research directed towards filling these gaps is discussed.

Brief reference is made to the major fields of basic or fundamental research connected with the fatigue of structures including, the application of fracture mechanics to the theory of crack propagation, elevated temperature behaviour of aircraft materials, atmospheric turbulence, Cited by: This book is primarily a textbook written for people working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials associated with design, predictions, load spectra and experimental verification.

to growing concern regarding fatigue problems in aircraft structures. At that time, a hundred percent of the commercial and military aircraft structures were made out of metal and Dr. Plantema was deeply convinced that sharing practical experience and academia research on a much broader range was essential to overcome fatigue of Size: KB.

The publication focuses on problems of aeronautical fatigue and structural integrity. The preferred topics include: full-scale fatigue testing of aircraft and aircraft structural components, fatigue of materials and structures, advanced materials and innovative structural concepts, damage tolerant design of aircraft structure.

Fatigue failures in structures frequently occur in joints. Various catastrophic accidents due to fatigue have been reported in the literature.

As a consequence joints are a major issue for designing against fatigue. The prime purpose of a joint is to transmit loads from one element of the structure.

This book is primarily a textbook written for engineers, students and teachers, and for people working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials. The book can be used for graduate and undergraduate courses, workshops, and short courses for people working in the industry or research institutes.

The book also offers useful comments for researchers in view of the practical. Materials fatigue performance is commonly characterized by an S-N curve, also known as a Wöhler is often plotted with the cyclic stress (S) against the cycles to failure (N) on a logarithmic scale.S-N curves are derived from tests on samples of the material to be characterized (often called coupons or specimens) where a regular sinusoidal stress is applied by a testing machine.
